Legal Intern

A legal intern provides support to lawyers and paralegals in a law office. Duties can vary depending on the size and type of law firm but may include conducting legal research, drafting documents, and assisting with case preparation. This is an excellent opportunity for students who are considering a career in law to gain valuable experience. In addition to gaining practical experience, legal interns also have the opportunity to observe lawyers in action and learn about the day-to-day operations of a law office. Those who complete a legal internship often find it easier to transition into a full-time position after graduation.

Qualifications, training and skills required
  • A legal intern is an individual who works in a law office or with a lawyer, learning about the day-to-day work of a lawyer. Interns typically perform research, write memos or briefs, and assist with trial preparation. Some internships are paid, while others are unpaid. Typically, to be eligible for a legal internship, an individual must be enrolled in law school. However, some internships are available to undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in law.
  • In addition to being enrolled in law school or having an interest in law, most legal internships require strong research and writing skills. Interns must also be able to work independently and be detail-oriented.
